The Banjara Teej Festival is one of the most vibrant and culturally significant celebrations of the Banjara (Lambada) community in Telangana, including parts of Mahabubabad District. Celebrated during the Shravana month (July–August), the festival spans nine days and symbolizes prosperity, fertility, devotion, and the arrival of the monsoon. During the festivities, young unmarried girls sow wheat seeds in beautifully decorated bamboo baskets, nurture them throughout the nine days, and carry them in colorful processions while singing traditional folk songs and performing energetic Lambadi dances. On the final day, the sprouted baskets are ceremonially immersed in a nearby river or pond, marking the successful completion of the festival and invoking blessings for happiness, prosperity, and a good future. Women adorn themselves in vibrant traditional attire embellished with mirrors, beads, silver ornaments, and intricate embroidery, making the celebration a spectacular display of the Banjara community’s rich cultural heritage.
